Beach Break Live Wins Best Small Festival and Promoter of the Year!
We're gobsmacked, tears are shed and drinks are drunken!: Ladies annnnnnnnnnnnnd Gentleman. The votes are in. The judges have made their decision! And would you believe it, we actually won......... not one....... but TWO!
BEST SMALL FESTIVAL and PROMOTER OF THE YEAR
A massive THANK YOU to all of you guys who voted for Beach Break Live, less we forget our bingo winging blackberry wielding grandmas who blue toothed the message round their nursing homes to get those extra votes. Merci beaucoup.
Seriously though, these awards really do mean a lot to us, particularly given the character building circumstances we had to endure in 2009!
Promoter of the Year
Promoter of the Year was voted for by the industry and unanimously awarded to us for the epic achievement of relocating the festival within a week. Once again, to the countless people who worked literally round the clock to pull it out the bag, our most sincere thanks.
Best Small Festival
Best Small Festival was the big award of the night. It was voted for by you, the people that really matter, so winning this award fills us with unbridled joy. Winning Best Small Festival has put Beach Break Live on the podium alongside Glastonbury & Bestival. Nay bad!

Beach Break Live Nominated For 3 Festival Awards
Top 10 shortlisted for: Best Small Festival: Best Dance Event: Best Headline Performance from Dizzee Rascal: Thanks to your votes, Beach Break Live has been shortlisted in 3 categories in the UK National Festival Awards!!! Its a great achievement and testament to the passion and support of ticket holders, crew and artists alike – so thanks again to everyone.
We’ve been top 10 shortlisted for:
Best Small Festival
Best Dance Event
Best Headline Performance from Dizzee
It’s truly brilliant that we’ve been shortlisted as Best Small Festival particularly given the unprecedented move to Kent. Whilst we modestly accept some compliments for putting the show together, what really makes an event is the atmosphere and the people and we really think you guys did make it The Best Small Festival.
To be shortlisted for Best Headline Performance is also a big deal - we are the only small festival nominated in this category and find ourselves running with the big dogs. That said, for anyone who experienced Dizzee’s fire hydrant requiring gig at Beach Break this is no surprise – the performance was a true epic . Splendid effort Dizzee, we salute you!

Important News for Ticket Holders Regarding St Agnes Site
Please click here: Dear Beloved Beach Breakers,
Massive apologies for the radio silence. The last weeks have undoubtedly been the most tough and frustrating days in our lives and in the life of beach break. We would have shared it all with you if we could have done, but we have been tied and gagged in ongoing legal wranglings and the sands shifted every couple of hours, meaning communication has been out of the question. In addition to this, if we had released any information before now, we would have jeopardised our chances of solving the problems we were facing. On Wednesday last week, with trucks on their way to start building this years sold out festival, we took the hit of the century and the event was controversially and unexpectedly de railed by a small number of well connected Councillors against the advice of every authority and the planning department. Since then St Agnes has been back on, then back off, solicitors and barristers employed, back on, tears shed, and then again back off.
Then, on Thursday the council, who wanted the event to go ahead but who were not willing to undermine their councillors, told us they believed they had found a way for the event to be held on an amazing site 10 minutes down the road. We wept with relief, and were about to tell you all on when the ordeal started again with us being told the event could run, then it could not, then it could and then finally that it could not.
Beach Break “Lives”!
However, all is not lost. The last thing we want to do is let down our ticket holders - we know how much everyone has been looking forward to this event as have we! We are currently working on a plan to salvage the start of your summer. We are looking at two main options – the first one is to hold the event at another site and we will have more info on this on Monday. The second is to run a camping event at a different beach location. Whatever happens the scene is set for a legendary week. The Beach Break spirit does not dwindle. In fact we’re fighting fit! Soon we’ll all be able to look back on this and laugh..! The scene is set for a legendary Beach Break Lives with a vibe of defiant joy – old school style.
We will know exactly where we stand on Tuesday Morning and will tell you the craic immediately.
What the hell has happened?
I think it is important we explain to you what has happened. Whilst we can’t make direct accusations for legal reasons – we want you to know as much as possible and assume that more accurate evidence will come out in good time.
Basically to run a festival you need a Premises License and the decision of whether an event takes place is in the hands of the authorities who have experience in the relevant area. In a completely unique set of circumstances (as far as we are aware), the patch of Cornwall where we had expected to party is covered by an ancient planning law set up in the 70’s named Article 4, laid down to stop people camping on the hills which means you also require Planning Permission for people to camp.
The team here and the top event professionals we employ have worked full throttle with the Council over the last 6 months to organise the event and get the relevant licenses in place including Planning. Without exception, the relevant authorities – Police, Fire, Highways, Health and Safety etc have approved it – hence the granting of the Premises License and the recommendation for approval by our Planning Officer. Indeed, it was agreed with the authorities and our team, that in our joint opinion, everything was in place and we gave up our back up site back in April. Added to that in the history of events on this site, which date back to World War 2, including the infamous SAS ball and Surfstock last year, permission has never been refused.
Under normal circumstances, politics is kept out of the process of licensing festivals. However, in this instance, the final decision was placed in the hands of a panel of 12 Councillors who have no experience in organising large events. Against the advice of the authorities, every event professional employed by us and the Planning Officer, the decision by this particular panel of councillors was to stop the event – with 10 days to go!
At first the powers that be – namely The Head of Planning and Regeneration for Cornwall were confident that the situation could be managed. At this stage countless solicitors and even 2 top planning barristers were involved to make sure the situation was resolved. The head of planning was of a view that the event should go ahead and it seemed that everything would be ok. The planning department asked us to give them what they needed to not take enforcement action and to let the event go ahead. In order to make it 100% air tight, we offered to stop ticket holders from using the beaches for safety reasons and to close the quarry venue to stop potential harm to theoretical bats. (Even though we had already provided evidence that there aren’t any!). We also had to disprove incorrect information from an objector about traffic congestion, even though our traffic Plan had already been signed off and approved by the Police and the authorities. We did everything we were asked but once again the goal posts shifted, this time to ticket holder’s safety before and after the event!...
In short we’ve been professionally shafted. By who and why we’re not quite sure. The decision has caused a divide within the council itself with a number of senior officials arguing that the decision has been unjust and that Beach Break Live has been caught in a political minefield just before the elections and in the current merge of the various Cornish Councils to One Cornwall.
Obviously, it’s a blow but not one we won’t bounce back from. We’ve worked very hard to design an event that works in peace with the local area and whilst the Council’s decision has gone against the interests of the ticket holder, artists, charities, thousands employed by the event, countless businesses that stood to benefit, the wider community and an already struggling local and regional economy – we will not go quietly in to the night.
We are busy behind the scenes, working 24/7 and will be back in touch late on Tuesday morning to tell you what we have up our sleeves .
In the wise words of The Beastie Boys ‘You have to fight, for your right, to party!’ and party we will!
The BBL Team x

Beach Break Live Has NOT Been Cancelled!
There are some rumours going around about the event being cancelled. Click here to put these at bay! : Dearest Beach Breakers,
Beach Break Live has not been cancelled!
Apologies for the delay in posting this on the website. Most importantly, I can confirm that Beach Break Live has definitely not been cancelled.
The event received the License it needs to run some time ago. Over the past 6 months detailed discussions with the key authorities in Cornwall resulted in the festival being granted permission to run on the spectacular headland in St Agnes which has a rich history of hosting events.
Despite the overwhelming support from the various council authorities, local businesses and residents, a planning committee held on Wednesday 27th May voted against granting the event planning permission. It is almost unheard of for a festival to need planning permission and it was only introduced a few years ago in this particular area. To this date, full planning permission has never been turned down for an event. The decision made by the committee was made against the advice given to them by the authorities and planning department who have recommended the application for approval and granted the necessary licenses, subject to the event fulfilling key safety criteria. Unfortunately, despite these safety criteria being met, the committee was presented with incorrect and incomplete information by a minority of objectors in the meeting and they used this incorrect information to make their decision.
The important thing is that this decision does not reflect the view of the wider Council, local residents and businesses involved and the planning permission has NOT been formally refused. We are working closely with senior members of Cornwall County Council to get the issues resolved as quickly as possible and are 100% confident that the festival will go ahead as planned.
Finally, we are noticing some negative posts on the forums and may see some comments in the press in the coming days from the small number of people who are objecting to the event. Unfortunately they do not have the full information regarding how the event is organised and the profound impacts it has on the local economy and wider tourism industries. However, it is very important that ticket holders and supporters of the event do not bad mouth these people - they are ultimately entitled to their personal opinions and we should try and rise above it.
I guarantee we will be updating you with news as soon as we have it. Until then beach breakers, keep the faith.
Signing out for now,
Celia, Ian and team

Thanks to the 2007 Beach Breakers
There was a whole lot of love in the air: A massive thank you to everyone involved in Beach Break Live 2007 - ticket holders (for making the vibe), crew (for making it happen), Gilgermesh (for pointing the current bun in our direction) and of course the local community for making everyone welcome.
Thanks to everyone for your feedback on the antics of 2007. We hope that you find a little piece of yourself somewhere in Beach Break Live 2008!

Beach Break Live go a slaying on Dragons Den
And indeed the beasts were slain: It were nuts. Without doubt the most surreal experience imaginable... Check out Celia's reaction when we won the money and the Dragons stand up..... "Oh my god, f**king hell you're massive"
paste this link to watch the episode www.beachbreaklive.com/holding/media/dragons_den.wmv
Anyhow, we pulled a Uey and said no thanks to the cash money from the Dragons to partner with Outgoing.co.uk a Student Travel and Events specialist.
Fear not, it will not go to our heads, we'll be keeping our values of community high and keeping our impact on the environment low.
